Small but Dynamic:  The Dynamy Youth Academy Graduates Six

By Reggie Hill, Dynamy Advisor

Six students recently graduated from the Dynamy Youth Academy in Worcester, MA.  Each of the graduates was recognized for their individual strengths and personalities, while some of the underclassmen were acknowledged for their accomplishments in attendance, academics and class spirit. Graduates Daniela Ortiz and Lily Nguyen received the Spirit of John S. Laws Award, an annual award voted on by all members of the program. In remembrance of John S. Laws, the award recognizes an individual in the program who demonstrates compassion, a desire to learn, willingness to share, leadership and overall courage.

During the evening, we also acknowledged the individuals, organizations and community members who contributed to the Youth Academy. Special thanks were given to Dr. Calvin Hill, Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Worcester Polytechnic Institute; Stephanie Williams, Admissions Counselor at Becker College; and Professor Mark Miller and students from Clark University who helped prepare our students for the 2006 mock trial. Julie Lesure, Assistant District Attorney, was recognized as Collaborator of the Year.  Julie assisted YA students in preparing and performing its first mock trial this past spring.  Retired Air Force Colonel Henry Cyr, Director of the Burncoat High School ROTC, gave the keynote address and urged students to live by the Air Force Core Values of "excellence, courage, and public service." He also recommended that students embrace "respect and responsibility."

The graduates each took turns to thank the many people within the Worcester Community whose generosity makes the program possible: staff, their families, and finally each other.  This small class of six has been accepted to numerous institutions of higher education, from schools in the Consortium of Worcester Colleges to schools as far away as Atlanta, Georgia.
