The Nellie Mae Education Foundation Announces its New Strategic Focus

Can a Classroom Intervention Reduce the Achievement Gap by 40%?

A report in the September 1, 2006, issue of Science magazine presents research showing that a classroom-based intervention significantly improved the grades of a group of African-American middle school students and reduced the racial achievement gap between those students and their white student peers by 40%. The research was conducted by a team from the Psychology Departments at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Yale University, and funded in large part by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, the largest philanthropy in New England dedicated exclusively to education.

New England After 3PM

Across New England, one in five children has no safe, supervised activity after the school day ends. The lack of adult supervision means these children are left to take care of themselves at a time of day when juvenile crime peaks, and when a range of inappropriate behaviors beckon, including drugs and alcohol, gangs and teen sex. Those are among the findings of a new report, New England After 3 PM, issued today by the Afterschool Alliance in conjunction with the Governor’s Afterschool Summit in Boston.

Convergence warns of threats to college access

A new report warns that the New England region faces a convergence of trends similar to those at the national level, with potentially serious negative consequences on higher education opportunity for low-income, minority, and other underserved populations. Declining grant aid, changing demographics, competition among colleges, and other factors will collide, according to the report, leading to diminished college participation for the nation’s fastest growing and most disadvantaged groups. Achieving the Dream

The Nellie Mae Education Foundation has awarded grants to
Capital Community College, Housatonic Community College and Norwalk Community
College to participate in Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count.
Achieving the Dream is a national initiative to improve student success in
community colleges. The grants will support each of the colleges’ efforts to
develop a plan to improve student achievement. Start-up funding for Achieving
the Dream has been provided by Lumina Foundation for Education, which
will continue providing funding for the 27 community colleges that joined the
initiative in 2004. Colleges outside Connecticut that are joining the initiative
this year will receive support from KnowledgeWorks Foundation and Lumina.

Testimony For The Senate Task Force on Public Higher Education

Wilson recently testified before the Massachusetts State Senate Task Force on Public Higher Education, declaring that "accessible higher education is the civil right of the 21st century" and "the only secure path to a thriving and competitive Commonwealth."
